Of all the procedures performed in a dental practice, perhaps the “scariest” of them all is tooth extraction. For centuries, tales of woe and pictures of tying a string to a door in order to perform an extraction have spread throughout the world. Fortunately, at our Huntington Beach pediatric dental practice, the days of the painful extraction have been relegated to the past.

The fact is that, by adolescence, nearly all baby teeth will exfoliate and some of them will need to be extracted. The process of tooth extraction, using our state-of-the-art techniques, has become an almost entirely painless one.

In the vast majority of cases, primary or baby teeth can be removed using a topical anesthetic to numb the area followed by deposition of a local anesthetic. The local anesthetic will block the innervation that allows the patient to feel pain. Once numb, the tooth can be extracted painlessly and atraumatically with the patient barely aware that the extraction has taken place.

At Park Pediatric and General Dentistry, our Huntington Beach pediatric dental office, we are also fully equipped to extract teeth in more complicated situations. Where anxiety and fear are evident in our patients, the use of nitrous oxide often helps diminish anxiety and will allow for a much more comfortable experience.

In cases where more extensive surgical procedures are required for our patients, we offer conscious sedation, which will allow our specialists to perform the necessary procedures without the patient feeling any discomfort whatsoever.

In the very rare occasions, where general anesthesia is necessary, our office will refer the patient to an office that can accommodate these needs as well.
