White Spots Reduction (MI Paste Remineralization Therapy)

 

What causes White Spot Lesions?

When our teeth lose the necessary minerals that keep them healthy, white spot lesions form. White spot lesions may be an early indicator of a cavity forming. The tooth surface becomes porous and rough and these white spot lesions may lead to the development of dental cavities.

 

White spot lesions are caused by cyclical imbalances between demineralization and remineralization which result from an acidic environment caused by bacteria. These white spot lesions can be caused by the following:

 

  • White spot lesions can form within 1 month of the start of orthodontic treatment because accumulation of plaque around brackets and bands increases, which causes enamel demineralization.
  • White spots can appear in connection with a condition called fluorosis, which is the result of having an excessive intake of fluoride. People who live in areas where drinking water contains a high fluoride level often encounter this problem.
  • Sometimes these spots are caused by nutrition or genetics.
  • Some children also develop white spots on their teeth as the teeth develop.

 

White spot lesions can cause severe esthetic problems. Park Pediatric and General Dentistry provides minimally invasive treatments that maintain a conservative approach to patient care.

 

Treatment for White Spot Lesions

 

The usage of MI Paste is a conservative approach to restorative dentistry that will reduce the amount of tooth removal during treatment. The MI Paste treatment is minimally invasive.

 

Park Pediatric and General Dentistry have been very successful with reducing white spot lesions using MI Paste, which generally supports the process of remineralization.

 

Treatment involves several short visits (no longer than 30 mins), 2 weeks apart. The number of appointments may differ and depends on the severity of the lesion.

 

Remineralization therapy is a fairly simple and inexpensive way to promote tooth structure preservation. These are the steps involved in the MI Paste Remineralization Therapy:

  1. The pores on the tooth surface are opened with an acidic soap
  2. MI Paste is applied to the white spot lesions
  3. Patients are advised not to eat or drink for 30 mins after treatment, which maximizes the uptake of the calcium and phosphate into the dental tubules
  4. Patients are instructed to apply MI Paste at home, twice daily for a minimum of 5 minutes

 

What is MI Paste?

MI Paste is a topical tooth creme containing Calcium, Phosphate (& fluoride). There are two different products:  MI Paste and MI Paste Plus (Plus contains fluoride). These products are for professional use that contain the active ingredient RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP), which is a special milk-derived protein that has the ability to release calcium and phosphate (and fluoride) to tooth surfaces. These products are also useful for patients who experience tooth sensitivity or have poor salivary flow.

 

Who should not use MI Paste?

Anyone with a milk protein or hydroxybenzoate allergy.
